Whooooooooeeeee, I'm on a roll!
First Cowboy’s in Starke, then our Tallahassee CD Release Party at the BBC. Then we’re off to Maryland and York, PA for the Amish Parrothead Bash.  Our 7th year running for this event, get yer tickets now, as this one always sells out quick. The Amish Parrotheads are donating the proceeds to Planet Gumbo this year. Thank you guys for helping us help those less fortunate!  After that, we come to Atlanta, Panama City, and back up to Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. . In June, we're back in Gulf Shores, Alabama, at a brand new place called The Hangout. Right on the beach. And then there's our annual Father's Day gig at AJ's in Destin. 

Daughter Annie, a painter who lives and works in Los Angeles, has just curated an exhibition called DREAM(land) which opens at the Jail Gallery in LA’s Chinatown on May 10, 2008. This show presents 14 artists from 5 countries working in a variety of media to provide their own metaphors for outer realms of consciousness, the bridge between lovely and scary, the other-worldly, the space-age, and the illusion.

From the DREAM(land) press release: “In 2008, contemporary society seems to look outside to find the center. It appears we all desire our own personal Shangri-la,” Wharton says. “DREAM(land) finds succor in both its pretty and its ugly. In a war-riddled world, we seek the twinkle. The fantasies that carry us far, far away.” Approaching her research for this project with Tinkerbellian candor, she found a simultaneous thread of progressive idealism, penchant for beauty, and clever irony in these artists’ works.  Wharton believes, as Anaïs Nin once mused, “Dreams are necessary to life.”

FAIR INDIGO   VERY COOL COTTON
One of my all time favorite trips (and I’ve taken quite a few) was two weeks spent in Peru. It included time in Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire, and Machu Picchu was the summer home of the head habanero of the whole shebang.

Here’s the Sauce Boss chowing down on a cute little guinea pig – a Peruvian delicacy.  No description does justice to the music, the architecture, the food, the Andes, the flora and fauna, the people, the riches, or the textiles.  Archeologists just found a gold necklace in Lake Titicaca that’s 4000 years old.  These guys have been doing it a long, long time. The designers of Machu Picchu were inspired by the Gods.  To be there is a breath taking, life changing experience.  Very spiritual.  The ancient Incas valued textiles as much as gold.  To this day, you see young girls, five, six years of age, tucked in next to Mom, sewing tiny bags to sell to the touristas.  While I was there I ran out of clean shirts, so I bought a t shirt at the Machu Picchu gift shop to get me through one more day. I still wear that shirt eight years later. It’s an incredible weave of Peruvian cotton.  Very breathable, and soft to the touch.  Since then I’ve been on the lookout for Peruvian cotton clothing.  However, it’s very hard to find. But now I have found a great connection.  Fair Indigo is the company.   They sell clothing made at a living wage, and the quality is top notch.  All in all, it feels so good.

baked salmon

BAKED SALMON WITH CRAWFISH STUFFING
Stuffing:
1 package of crawfish tails
1 cup chopped onions
¾ cup chopped celery
¼ cup butter
1 tsp sage
2 cups left over crumbled bread slices
1 egg, beaten

Saute onions and celery in butter, and then mix in sage.  Add crumbled breadcrumbs, crawfish tails, and egg.  Stir it all together. 

Next slice the skin off of a half a salmon filet (you know what to do with the skin don’t you?  Fry it like bacon and eat it with your eggs for breakfast tomorrow.) Then slice the filet across the middle, leaving it attached on one side.  Peel back the top and lay the stuffing across the lower part in a 1 “ thick layer, then fold the other part over it all.  Spray some vegetable oil over the top of the fish.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until done.  Of course you’ll need some Liquid Summer Hot Sauce to splash on top.

Here’s a totally over the top dining experience that is easy on the wallet.  The chef at Persepolis will knock you out. First, they bring you a monster, hanging off the plate flat bread, hot from the oven. Then there’s the combo appetizer – a little salad, an eggplant dish, yogurt, and grape leaves, accompanied by a plate of walnuts, basil, parsley, cilantro, onions, and feta. The stuffed grape leaves are incredible- spices and fruit mingling with the warm rice.  Of course, the huge entrées weighing in between ten and twenty dollars make this place both affordable and delectable. Check out the size o’ that veggie shish kabob with sour cherries. Daily specials are eleven bucks.  The Royal Persian Buffet is served Mon-Fri 11:30 AM – 3 PM. They can throw down on some lamb chops.  YUMM.  Absolutely authentic and a very nice vibe.
