ANNIE WHARTON
Our daughter, Annie Wharton, who recently showed work in the Armory Art Fair in NYC, ArtLA, and Miamis Art Basel, and was commissioned by such mega-developers as Trump Towers, 4 Seasons Hotels on Biscayne Boulevard, and Neiman Marcus Stores in Coral Gables and Orlando (look for her two "Lips" paintings in the cosmetics department at the Millenia Mall), is spotlighted in the hot-off-the-press edition of Oprahs O at Home magazine (page 81). Annie has also just launched a new version of her
website. Sign in at the "in touch" section to receive info about her upcoming exhibitions in your area. We just visited her new studio in LA's Chinatown when we were in California last month and were blown away.
Check it out.
FRITTO MISTO--A NEIGHBORHOOD ITALIAN CAFE
601 COLORADO AVE., SANTA MONICA, CA, 310-458-2829
& 316 PIER AVE., HERMOSA BEACH, CA 310-318-6098
How long is the wait?, I asked. Thirty minutes, she said. Hummmm. OK. So the salivation began. Looking over the jam packed room, with heads and elbows working to the tune of serious mastication, I know we were in for some kind of treat. In addition to the percussion section of forks, knives, and spoons, theres a lively din of chatter going on, accompanied by the industry in the kitchen where all hells breaking loose. YES! How bout a bottle of wine while we wait? Sure, the maitre d hands me a sheet with the list. I am looking at the reds- couple o Chiantes, a Cali Pinot Noir. AHHH! How bout this bottle from Tuscany?, the maitre d suggests. She brings the wine to where we are standing, puts the bottle between her knees, and slowly works the cork out with a two dollar cork screw. She said the waitresses keep running off with my good ones, as the cork comes out intact. So we are standing next to the ogling case with the stacks of Creme Brulee and what can only be described as gondolas of tiramisu. We are sipping our wine, checking out the mountainous salads coming out of the kitchen, and salivating like starving dogs.
The thirty minute wait gives me time to study the menu, which contains some quotes:
Fantastically good food at rock bottom prices.--Zagat
The very essence of the Italian cafe-- L.A. Magazine
The Menu: Salads come in small, medium, and large--a small salad was enough for three of us. The apps-classic Italian bill of fare. Then there is a build-yer-own pasta section. The pasta is home made, of course. Eleven pastas, and seventeen sauces make it a process deciding what to order. Then there are the Ravioli, Gnocchi, and Pillows. (pasta, stuffed with ricotta and basil) AND THEN (yes there is more) the specialties. An impressive vegetarian section (Thank you) is joined by the California/Italian sensibility. Italian turkey sausage lasagna, Alaskan crab cakes over lemon pepper, fettucini in a Dijon, Chardonnay, caper, and cream sauce. Chicken ravioli tossed in garlic cream sauce, topped with pico de gallo But wait--there is still more. You can also take sauces or pastas home to cook later. This place ROCKS!I had to try the Sweet Potato Ravioli (see the picture at <http://sauceboss.com/news.htm> ) a double dose of wild mushrooms in cream sauce. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Yeah! And I like the huge dollop of fresh minced garlic to mix with the olive oil to dip yer bread in. SON! So three of us had salad, an entree a piece, dessert, and a bottle of Tuscan wine for $73. No wonder I saw hugs and kisses from the patrons as they left.
