THE TRULY GREAT MICHAEL BURKS graced us with his generosity and virtuosity when we played the Freebird Café in Jax Beach. He walked in the door and I immediately called him to the stage and we jammed the whole set. Thanks, Michael for a smokin' good time on the beach. What a great player and also a beeeeautiful person. Look at that grin!

THEY CAME FROM PLANET GUMBO TO JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA
Here's a picture of some of it. The kids stole the show and the heart of the Sauce Boss simultaneously. The third installment of "Invasion from Planet Gumbo" was met with cheers of glee from kids and parents alike. Thank you to all who came to the Sultzbacher Center Shelter to share in the spirit of community. Some very cool things are about to happen on Planet Gumbo. Stay tuned...

FORAGING OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND IN HOMESTEAD, FLA
Homestead is home of a sizable Mexican population and once you get a few blocks off of US Highway 1, the little Mexican restaurants are the real deal.
So I'm crusing aimlessly through South Florida and I see all these people out in a spent tomato field gleaning the sun-ripened good-uns out of the rotting tomatoes. The field was what? About five acres at least? And still there were tons o' maters wasting away in the sun. Screeching to a halt, bag in hand, I was an instant gleaner. Took me all of five minutes to fill the bag and what am goin to do with all these tomatos? SALSA! A trip to the supermarket in downtown Homestead produced onion, jalapeno and serano peppers, cilantro, tomatillos, and while I was there, I copped the ultimate score. Sitting on top of the meat counter was a pile of... are you ready for this?...I'm talkin bout.. the sin of sins... could it be?... oh my goodness... IT IS! . . .It's PORK RINDS. CRACKLIN'S. THE SKIN OF THE PIG!!!! But listen now. These are not just any pork product. These are the absolute BEST! Pieces of pigmeat with fat and skin attached, plunged into the deep fat fryer and cooked to Latin perfection. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH MAN, that's good! OK, I still need some more stuff for the salsa, so I cruise down to "Robert Is Here" Fruit Stand for mangoes and Key limes. Robert has been in the fruit biz since he was seven years of age. That was forty three years ago. The fruit stand is a typical Florida pre-Disney World roadside attraction. A Model T Ford and asimilar vintage Detroiter are parked out front on the weekends. Around back is a menagerie with iguanas, chickens, goats, and a bunch of real big turtles. Like the biggest turtle I ever saw. Must weigh 300 pounds! Inside, is the place for all yer tropical fruit needs. In addition to all the regular citrus and apples and pears and veggies, Robert has Mamey,Sapodilla, Asian Guavas, little tiny bananas, and a strange tropical fruit called Red Alama. It tastes like rasberry yogurt. Weird but tasty. He's also got jellies, relishes, honey, syrup, dressings, marinades, sauces, mustards, chutneys, dried fruit and nuts. But the popular spot at Roberts' is the fresh fruit milkshakes. There's always a line of touristas waiting for their sugar fix. Oh! Don't forget yer dried alligator sticks.
