SOOOOOOOOOO. 2003 AND STILL PLAYIN'
THE BLUES. WHO'D A THUNK IT?
Here's the
skinny on the fat gigs Naples, Miami's Tobacco Road,
House of Blues in Orlando, and more.
MAN, WHAT A GREAT TIME WE HAD
WITH ALL YOU NORTHERNERS LAST MONTH! Thanks to
all who braved the elements to come see/hear/smell/taste
the show. Especially the Rochester gig. We had folks
drive all the way from West Virginia to Rochester through
blizzard conditions to have some Holiday Gumbo. There
was ice and snow everywhere and still the room filled
with warmth and good cheer. Good crowd! And Rock &
Roll Joe makes every show whenever we hit the Dinosaur
BBQ. This venerable octogenarian played clarinet with
Tommy Dorsey and to this day he's the rockinest cat
in Rochester, New York.

Sauce Boss & Rock n Roll Joe
Congratulations to the Tap Room in Buffalo--back in
the old location. One of my all-time favorite rooms
to play. Moondog's and Mutt 'n Jeff's--always a gas.
What a rockin weekend in NYC and DC! Hogs and Heifers
on the upper east side is the laidest back place in
the City. Madam's Organ in the Adam's Morgan district
in DC was one of Playboy's top 10 bars in the country
and it's about the hippest crowd around. We lost track
of the time, first thing I knew, the sound man was cutting
us off. "We'll get busted if we can't get all these
people out of here." Oh well.

LIQUID
SUMMER VEGETABLE BEEF SOUP
So it's cooooold outside. Old man Winter is nippin at
your nose and your ears are red from the chill. Here's
a remedy for the wind and weather.
1 Lb stew beef
1/4 cabbage chopped
1 large onion chopped
3 stalks celery chopped
2 yellow squash chopped (if you can find 'em)
4 small potatoes chopped
1can garbanzo beans
1 can tomatoes
1 can water
4 tbs Liquid Summer Hot Sauce
2 tbs soy sauce
Brown the beef
Throw it and ever thing else into a crock pot and cook
it till the beef is tender
GAS MART(FAR EAST MAX
EXPRESS CUISINE)
3618 Apalachee Parkway Tallahassee, FL 32301 850-402-1090
Here's a real sleeper. Across the street from Wal-Mart,
is a convenience store with the cheapest gas on this
side of town. Inside, nestled into the corner is Max,
cookin' the hits from China. A full menu of Oriental
dishes are prepared as you wait. There's three or four
tables for sit down/chow down. Entrees are about four
dollars for small, six for large orders. Plus there's
a few American style sandwiches. Catfish with tartar
sauce and lettuce-$2.89 on the to-go menu. I have eaten
here only a few times, but it's been respectable every
time. Fresh vegetables, NOT overcooked. And it's almost
as fast as BK or Macky Dee's. No MSG on request is another
bonus. If you're in a hurry and can't take another coorporate
burger, give Max a try.
OBITUARY
Imagine our surprise and dismay when we drove
up to the Mendenhall Inn and Restaurant to find a sign
on the door! " We'd like to thank our customers
of many, many years" etc. After driving an hour
and a half from Biloxi, with the "Original Revolving
Table Restaurant" on our minds, needless to say
we were disappointed. They were closed for good. The
giant lazy susan laden with home-cooked southern delicacies
revolves no more. So it goes with many of the old family-owned
eating establishments. I know there's a restaurant in
your past that is no longer around and you wish it were.
It's difficult in this day and age to make a go of it
with chain restaurants everywhere. That is why I like
to share my "Foraging on the Highway" finds
with all y'all. We need to give our local Mom and Pop
some business or they might all throw in the towel.
SAUCE BOSS SEZ:
I have got to say something to all of our friends, including
the people who work at the venues, the folks that come
to the shows, our publicists, agents, my manager/wife--Ruthie,
the Ingredients--John Jones and Jim Jenness, and all
who we've touched in 2002. It's all good, but it just
gets better all the time. THANK YOU! SEE YA IN 2003!
