Sauce Boss
Gazette
Volume 8 Number 4 * April 2000
I've been doin' some hard travelin',I thought you know'd.
I've been doin' some
hard travelin,
Way down the road.
I've been doin' some hard travelin',
Hard
ramblin, hard gamblin'.
I've been doin' some hard travelin', Lord.
(Woody
Guthrie)
It's only April and we've already done shows in Key West and Atlanta,
South
Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, Virginia, Washington DC,
Birmingham,
and of course all over our great state of Florida. I've also
been lucky enough
to fit in a trip to Machu Picchu, Peru, and another to
the Mississippi Delta.
I
can tell you this is going to be a hard traveling year for the Sauce
Boss and
the Ingredients. We are bookin'. Check our concert schedule at
, 'cause chances are we'll be playing in
your
area soon. Coming up in April are shows in the Atlanta area and
back home in
Tallahassee. Next month is Key West.
BISCUITS WITH HOT SAUCE On KFFA-AM since 1941, "Sunshine" Sonny Payne has been hosting THE blues
radio
show from Helena, Arkansas. This is the show that catapulted Sonny
Boy
Williamson and so many other Delta musicians into Blues fame.
So little ol' Sauce Dude had the honor of playing on King Biscuit Time
(Show
Number 13,482). I walked into the station ten minutes before the
downbeat and
met Sonny Payne. I ended up playing the entire show on my
old 1933 National
Steel guitar. What a rush! Sonny's a great guy.
He went on and on about my music: "I hear a lot of 'em. I see a lot of
'em. I
know a lot of 'em, and that is fantastic. You don't take a back
seat to
anybody, in my opinion. . . I like the way you phrase your tunes
and yet you're
such a master, an artist on the guitar itself, and that's
really something."
Thank you, "Sunshine" Sonny Payne, for being such a gracious host. I'll
see
you next time I'm in the Delta.
THE COOLEST THING HAS HAPPENED to me and The Ingredients--we just got
hooked up
with a really great drummer! He comes to us from a two-year
stint with Colonel
Bruce Hampton. If any of you know the Colonel, you
know that he has a very
rigorous touring schedule--so this guy's done a
lot of gigs. He's got a great
vibe and he's an old friend (for a young
man). I played music with his dad
(Terry Kori) thirty years ago. Yeah!
Shannon Kori is the "drummer de jour" and
we're real excited about each
and every gig. I remember when Shannon was three
years old, wailing on
the drums. He's come a long way, but don't worry: a
couple of months with
us and he'll be playing like a three year old again.
WE HAD A PARTY AT BARNACLE BILL'S RIVERSIDE (SAINT AUGUSTINE, FL). We had
them
potato farmers rollin' in the aisles. Really! They were actually
rollin' on the
floor! Man, these folks can party with the best of 'em.
My datil buddy, Chris
Way, put on the dog for 150 friends for a sold out
dinner show. We all gathered
around the gumbo pot and devoured it like
crazy. At the end of the evening we
waddled to our cars in the after glow
of good food and company. What a great
gig down by the river!--the boats
comin' and goin'. Everyone kickin' back.
Thank you Chris for inviting us
to the party.
Incidentally, if y'all aren't familiar with Chris Way, you should be. He
is
the owner of Dat'l Do It, the largest selling Datil pepper sauce on the
market.
Not only that, this man has an overactive imagination. He also
owns 3 Barnacle
Bill's restaurants in the St. Augustine area. The
original Barnacle Bill's in
downtown historic St. Augustine always has a
large line out the door. There's
also one on the beach and now there's
one on the banks of Trout Creek. Very
chill. Try some of that Dat'l Do
It sauce in your shrimp cocktail sauce or on
some ribs. Good stuff.

THE FOOD NETWORK'S "EXTREME CUISINE" episode featuring the Sauce Boss has
been
airing quite a bit lately. Check their website at
for
their weekly schedule, if you haven't seen it
yet.
AND SPEAKING OF THE INTERNET--thanks to all of our fans who have kept our
"Recipes" CD near the top of the Independent Blues charts at Amazon.com
for the
last ten months. And thanks to the listeners of MP3.com who have
put "Your
Maytag Done Broke Down" and "She's a Monkey" high on their
Blues charts too.
